Wall is a mixed media sculpture from Sam Gilliam’s Hinge series of the late 1990s wherein he continued his experimentation with color, form, and dimension. Large swaths of red, blue, orange, and green loosely bleed into one another alongside collaged elements of geometric drawings. With hinges joining each birch panel, the sculpture may be opened or closed, simultaneously capturing both mass and void. Through the mobility of the hinges and fluidity of the colors, Wall encapsulates the improvisational nature that is inherent in Gilliam’s work.
