Born in 1933 in Mississippi, he emerged as a prominent figure in the Washington Color School movement during the 1960s. Gilliam is renowned for his pioneering technique of staining and draping canvas, challenging traditional notions of painting. His work is featured in major museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Tate Modern in London.
