Native American Eastern Woodland Stone Gorget
Item Details
Description
Native American, United States, Pike County, Indiana, Petersburg, Eastern Woodland, ca. 100 to 1000 CE. A hand-carved stone pendant or gorget with a singular hand-drilled perforation through the center. The stone is a smooth dark gray hue, and both ends taper inward towards the middle. The hole appears to have been drilled from both sides, with a twisting motion. The exact use of drilled stones is unknown, however it is thought that these were possibly worn as pendants or gorgets and may have indicated rank or prestige. Size: 5" L x 2.375" W (12.7 cm x 6 cm)

Provenance: private Kansas City, Missouri, USA collection, ex-John Townsend collection, formed in the 1970s and earlier
