Description
Native American, Papago culture, Sonoran Desert, Arizona / New Mexico, ca. early to mid 20th century. A very large and early Papago basket of a traditional conical form, woven from native plants. The early Tohono O'odham or Papago baskets were primarily utilitarian - used to carry water and firewood, prepare food, and store items. These baskets are handmade - skillfully woven with native plants including yucca, beargrass, and Devils Claw. The hues are natural as Native American weavers appreciated the natural colors of desert plants. This example is finely woven and presents an attractive pattern of fretted bands that radiate from the center. Size: 11.375" W x 3.75" H (28.9 cm x 9.5 cm)
