Item Details
Description
1st century AD. A bronze bull with broad head, prominent muzzle, large round and protruding eyes, half-moon horns. Cf. Rolland, H., Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, item 239ff, for similar figures. 43 grams, 45mm (1 3/4"). From a private collection formed in the Netherlands; previously in a European collection formed prior to 1980. In ancient Rome the bull was at the centre of the sacrifice of the suovetaurilia (or suovitaurilia), a purification rite with an apotropaic character of Indo-European origin: it was intended to invoke the protection of the deities. It consisted in the consecration of a pig (sus), a ram (ovis) and a bull (taurus) generally to the god Mars, even if only the bull was sacrificed to this god while the pig was sacrificed to the chthonic deities and the lambs or the ram to the god Quirinus.
