Description
2nd-3rd century AD. A bronze fibula brooch of lunate form; the terminals meeting a stylised animal figure flanked by circular loops; the body of the crescent decorated with recessed cells retaining traces of blue enamelling with two lateral lobes; loop below; remains of pin lug and catchplate to the reverse; accompanied by a custom-made display stand. See Hattatt, R., Brooches of Antiquity, Oxford, 1987, pp.231 and 233, no.1170 and pp.379 and 381, no.1420, for similar examples. 14.1 grams total, 53mm including stand (2").
