Description
Exceedingly rare 1922 Rosine Antinea, ou au fond de la mer (Antinea, or at the Bottom of the Sea) clear glass bottle, glass stopper capped with carved horn and mother-of-pearl (F), two labels. *Designed in the form of a slender French military flask or canteen by Mario Simon and Paul Poiret. 4 1/4 in. $1,000-2000 In Paul Poiret and His Rosine Perfumes Christie Mayer Lefkowith writes "The Rosine catalogue lists "Antinea, ou au fond de la mer" as being produced and marketed in both a metal flacon and a glass flacon. However, no examples of the glass version have yet been located, even in Rosine promotional materials, advertising or catalogues.” To our knowledge this is the first glass version known to appear. The name Antinea appears in Roman and Greek legend as queen of the lost island of Atlantis; and in African folklore as queen of a mythical sea kingdom in the Sahara desert. Queen Antinea was characterized as a seductress who lured men (often military) into dangerous or compromising situations.
