Description
Italy, ca. 1st century BC. The hand-inscribed red granite base of an ancient luxury souvenir , commemorating the defeat of Antony and Cleopatra and the raising of an Egyptian obelisk in Rome. The base is finely inscribed: "IMP. CAESAR DIVI F. / AVGVSTVS / PONTIFEX MAXIMVS / IMP. XII COS. XI TRIB. POT. XIV / AEGVPTO IN POTESTATEM / POPVLI ROMANI REDACTA / SOLI DONVM DEDIT," translating to "General Caesar, Son of Divine (Caesar) Augustus the Pontifex Maximus, General Twelve (Times) Consul Eleven (Times), with the Tributian Power Fourteen (Times) / With Egypt Having Been Reduced Into the Power of the Roman People (Augustus) has Given this Gift to the Sun." This inscription was written on the base made for an obelisk which Augustus brought from Egypt after his defeat of Antony and Cleopatra. Today it is known as the Montecitorio Obelisk and still stands in Rome today. The base is carved from the same stone from which the Egyptian obelisk is carved.
