Tsukioka Yoshitoshi: The Decorum of Gekiketsu
Item Details
Description
  • Title: The Decorum of Gekiketsu
  • Artist: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
  • Date/Period: 1880s-1900s
  • Dimensions: 8"x10"
  • Materials: Woodblock print on paper
  • Additional Information: A minister of state in China's Spring and Autumn Era (770-476 BC) observes the poor farmer Xi Que (Gekiketsu in Japanese) and his wife treating each other with great respect, as if they were each other's guest. When the minister told the king, the king appointed Xi Que to an important position in the state of Jin. Xi Que would go on to successively higher positions.

This exceedingly rare woodblock by Yoshitoshi is one of two color illustrations from his book Nishiki-e shūshindan 錦絵修身談, "Brocade Pictures for Moral Education", Volume 3, published in 1882. Uses the following signature: Ōju Yoshitoshi ga with Yoshitoshi seal, 1884

    The Japanese Woodblock Print

The print measures 10 1/8" x 8 1/4" and is one of two color illustrations from a book (mentioned above). While all other documented copies have a vertical centerline crease, being that it's from a book, this one surprisingly does not have that crease. There are thin margins, with some thining, wearing, and discoloration towards the edges of the print. There is old repair work done in the upper left quadrant near the margin, but partially including into the story area. A clean verso. Strong colors within the print, nothing to significantly take away from the piece.

An exceptionally rare woodblock by Yoshitoshi with no copies being found in recent auction or sales records.

    About the Artist

The son of a Tokyo physician, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) is considered one of the last great masters of ukiyo-e. As a young boy he showed remarkable talent and began to study under the renowned Kuniyoshi at the age of 12. He also studied under Yosai and was adopted by the Tsukioka family.

As modernization pushed ahead following the opening of Japan to the West, Yoshitoshi suffered a nervous breakdown in 1872, living in poverty and ceasing all artistic production. He soon resumed working, adopting the artist name Taiso. In 1885, he began one of his most acclaimed series, "100 Views of the Moon". In the spring of 1892, he suffered his final mental breakdown and was committed to the Sugamo Asylum; he died shortly of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 53.

Yoshitoshi’s prints are known for their eerie and imaginative nature. From ghost stories to folktales, graphic violence to the gentle glow of the moon, Yoshitoshi not only offers compositional and technical brilliance, but also unfettered passion.
