Note: Frederick Hall, known by most as simply Fred Hall, is perhaps best known as a member of the Newlyn School of painters. Having studied at Lincoln School of Art between 1879 and 1881, he moved to Cornwall in the early 1880s to paint alongside fellow ex-Lincoln student, Frank Bramley, Stanhope Forbes and others. He remained until 1898. His Newlyn works combine the practice of working outside, en plein air, with an interest in social realism, particularly the depiction of rural life. However, as time went on, his style became more overtly impressionistic and this present, later, group of works demonstrates his more mature style. In 1911, Hall came to live in Speen, near Newbury where he remained until his death in 1948, aged 88. It was during this period that he came to know Harold Barton, senior partner at Dreweatt Watson and Barton, local agricultural auctioneers and land agents. Harold and his wife, Phyllis, became friends with Hall and helped to support him over the years. Harold would often take Fred on visits into the countryside, leaving him to paint for the day whilst he carried out his professional work.
