PATEK PHILIPPE CALATRAVA REFERENCE 3468 CIRCA 1960s 18kt YELLOW GOLD MANUAL WIND, given to artist IRWIN D HOFFMAN in appreciation of assistance in developing tribute to the crew of the U.S.S. Tampa who all perished after being struck by a torpedo in 1918. The case is 33MM. The crown has been replaced. It is missing a band. The watch is in working order but will benefit from a professional cleaning. The back is inscribed:I.D. HOFFMANAPPRECIATIONU.S.S. TAMPA 1967One of the crew members was Hoffman's brother. David A. Hoffman ENSIGN, 22, BOSTON, MA Hoffman, the oldest of four children, was a Harvard graduate, finishing in three and a half years. His parents had an arranged marriage before coming to the United States from Russia. His father was a tailor, and his mother owned a dry goods store. Hoffman was the first of the four Navy men assigned to TAMPA in chronological order. His brother, Irwin, an artist, commissioned paintings of CAPT Satterlee and Hoffman for the Coast Guard Academy, where they still hang today. His mother, Minnie, was the oldest TAMPA Gold Star Mother still living in 1959.
