Charles Joseph Grips (1825-1920, Dutch) Oil on Board, "Playtime" Kitchen Interior with Woman and Cat. In antique English Wood and Gesso Frame. Panel 13"x17". In frame measures/ 20"x24"x2" Weight 8 pds. PROVENANCE: H & P de Casseres, London/Charleston SC Estate. Charles Joseph Grips (1825-1920, Dutch) born in Grave, Holland, was also known as Carel Jozeph Grips a painter, draftsman and lithographer who spent much of his life in Belgium. Grips paintings are primarily of highly detailed quiet kitchen interiors in the style of the seventeenth century painter Pieter de Hooch and many feature a cat. Grips left Antwerp in 1837, where he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He then became a pupil of Jan Hendrik van Grootvelt. Grips taught his sons Ernest and Frits Grips, and Antoon van Welie. He lived alternately in the Netherlands and Belgium until he settled in Vught permanently in 1881.
