Description
1. VITTORIO SELLA. Mitre Peak and Muztagh Tower, 1909, Sella number HK 230(2). 11.4x15.2" gelatin silver print, printed c. 1909, mounted on 14x18" heavy gray board. Inscribed in very light pencil mount verso: Mitre Peak / Mustagh Tower. Inscribed in black ink verso: Karakoram, Mts. / Himalayan peaks in Cashmere / Mustagh Tower + Mitre Peak; in pencil: 230 Mustagh Tower (Telephoto). Typed on label affixed with tape: "The Mustagh Tower is not to be compared to any other known peak. Its sides are smooth, its angles clear and sharp. It appears to be a true monolith, a rocky mass of a single formation without traces of breaks or divisional planes. No other of any comparable size is known to exist." / Mitre Peak so named from its two prongs making it resemble a Bishop's cap. Its peaks are over 23,000 feet high.

Mitre Peak 6,010 m 19,718 ft. marks the confluence of the Baltoro Glacier with the Gasherbrum branch arriving from the SE and the Goodwin Austin branch arriving from the NE. Muztagh Tower 7,276 m 23,871 ft. is the 90th highest mountain.
Sella photographed every stage of their journey, generally leaving camp before breakfast with his assistant Botta and the coolies who carried the photographic and cinematographic apparatus, so that he could photograph the scenery, or catch the expedition on the march at picturesque places on the road. Often, he lingered behind to photograph some especially beautiful landscape feature, or he wandered around the outskirts of the camp searching for subjects to photograph.
