George Fields (American). "Distant Hamlet" - oil on canvas, ca. late 19th century. Signed on lower right. A wonderful landscape painting by American artist George Fields who specialized in Luminism. The composition of this painting includes a grass-banked, tranquil stream flanked by clusters of trees with a village in the middle ground marked by vernacular buildings and a church, the steeple of which rises to rolling clouds in the blue skies above. The painting is set in a custom ornate frame. Size: painting itself measures 26" W x 20" H (66 cm x 50.8 cm); 31.25" W x 25.25" H (79.4 cm x 64.1 cm) framed

Thought the term was not coined until 1954 by John Baur, who was the Director of the Whitney Museum of Art, Luminism was a late 19th-century painting style that reveled in the clarity of light. A group of American painters influenced by the Hudson River school of painting - most notably John Frederick Kensett, Fitz Hugh Lane, and Martin Johnson Heade - practiced Luminism. Luminist paintings, like this example, present a smooth finish with very lucid contours and finely detailed elements modeled by light. The sky is oftentimes emphasized, occupying about 50% of the composition.
