Item Details
Description
First Nations / Native American, Canadian Arctic, Inuit, ca. 1950s CE. A striking, dark green banded soapstone carving of a bird with outstretched wings, its body posed as if it is just beginning a dive to grab food from the surface of the water or a hole in the ground. The body is perched on a flared base and stands easily. Its tail feathers fan out behind it. The sculpture, while simple, has an elegant, lifelike vitality in it, suggesting a lifetime spent observing the habits of similar birds in nature. Size: 11.25" L x 11" W x 9.5" H (28.6 cm x 27.9 cm x 24.1 cm)

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985
