American school, 2nd half 19th century. Oil on canvas, unsigned. Bearded, seated man wearing a black suit with bow tie. His right arm rests on a book. Tear. 40"h. 33"w., framed, 46.5"h. 39.5"d. And a young girl with brown hair seated on a column capital. She's wearing a lacy dress with green sash and holding a garland of flowers. Patches, repairs and damage to frame. 36"h. 29"w., framed, 43"h. 36"w. Both descended in the Ward family of Worthington, Ohio, family lore states the girl was a child who died in her youth.
