Description
Pre-Columbian, from Northern Peru, Moche I or II, ca. 100 to 300 CE. A remarkable copper ceremonial knife (tumi) depicting a lord warrior seated on a throne of war clubs and inlaid with 20 vibrant pieces of turquoise. The ancient warrior holds a 'blood letting' beaker in one hand and a war club and shield with inlaid turquoise in the other. Topped with a tumi-shaped headdress, the figure's expressive visage displays inlaid turquoise eyes, a prominent nose, and a large mouth with gritted teeth. An additional cup and stirrup vessel lay at his feet as he sits atop an elaborate throne, which is further adorned with inlaid turquoise. A coaxl or warrior flap insignia is shown on the verso. The tumi itself exhibits a lengthy body that tapers towards its bottom and a flared cutting edge. Size: 1.5" W x 6.375" H (3.8 cm x 16.2 cm); 7.75" H (19.7 cm) on included custom stand.
