Description
b. 1987
Gabriel was born and raised in Los Alamos, New Mexico, notorious for creating the atom bomb. He studied art at the University of Arizona.
In 2011, Gabriel moved to New York City where he maintained a studio practice and interned with the sculptor Jordan Griska. In 2016, he was chosen to participate in the AICAD Summer Studio Residency Program, co-directed by William Powhida and Alan Lupiani. In 2017, he moved to Besancon, France. In 2020, he participated in a collaborative project for Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville, Virginia. He continues to live and work in France.
During my time in New York, I began to imagine my artworks from a different perspective, as if they were songs. I would create titles for unmade art, grouping them together in Excel as if they were text on the back of a CD, hoping one day to transform each title into a visual object.
Musicians such as Boards of Canada, as well as the website Pitchfork, are a source of inspiration in their approach to music. My work is not auditory, but I like to see how reformatting visual art to the structure of music can open up new ways of thinking about visual art and the art world.
