James Earle Fraser (1878 - 1953) had many public commissions for sculptures of famous political and social patrons. Fraser designed the 1913 buffalo nickel for the U.S. Treasury Department. He received a commission for the monumental version of a despairing Native American, “The End of the Trail” was placed in San Francisco, California, for its 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. In 1917 Fraser was awarded the commission for a monument to Alexander Hamilton for the U.S. Treasury Building.
