Item Details

Description

A Space Shuttle Parachute Time Delay Cutter. This piece of hardware was flown as part of the Space Shuttle's Solid Rocket Booster Assembly. When the boosters are jettisoned from the Shuttle they drop from an altitude of about 30 miles into the Atlantic Ocean for recovery. The decent is controlled by a series of parachutes. This device is part of that system. At specified time delays the cutters use an explosive charge applied to a metal guillotine blade to sever the lines allowing the chutes to deploy or inflate. After the SRB's are recovered, the expended ordinance are removed and scrapped. This one shows salt water corrosion. It has a 10/1996 manufacture date. It is in very good condition.
