Item Details
Description

Capitol Records 1964 "Beatles Award" radio industry award. This is an award from Capitol Records presented to radio station WSGN made to thank the station for their support of the Beatles during their first year in America.

The laminated wood plaque award features early promotional photo of the Beatles with what are thought to be reproduction signatures. It is also printed with signatures of Capitol Records execs Stanley M. Gortikov and William B. Tallant, Jr. both of whom were with the label from 1960 and instrumental in promoting the Beatles in the U.S.  Gortikov would go on to become President of Capitol and in 1968 would sign the Beatles to a subsequent record contract.

Item Highlights:

  • Capitol Records radio station recognition for helping to promote the Beatles during their first year
  • Features early promotional photo of the Fab Four with replicated autographs (while the autographs appear to be correct early autographs from the Beatles, they are not thought to be genuine, but rather printed)
  • Award dated 1964 and features signatures of then Capitol Records executives Stanley M. Gortikov and William B. Tallant, Jr. both of whom were with the label from 1960.
  • Laminated wood plaque in Very Good condition considering its 56-year age. Has some minor spotting and a minor crack in the laminate in one spot above George Harrison's head in the photo.
  • Award measures approx. 13" x 17"
  • Rare piece of memorabilia for any Beatles collector

Notes on the condition of all vintage awards like this one: Please do not buy this item if you want a brand new piece of memorabilia. These are historical artifacts from the year they were produced. As a result they may show signs of wear. Frankly, if you see a 20 to 50-year-old award purported to be in 100% perfect condition, it might be too good to be true. After all, an antique should have "good' wear. If not, you might want to question the piece.

As to where they came from, they could have been displayed in record label offices, recording studios, artist manager's offices, radio stations, private collector's homes and yes, of course, possibly the artist's or songwriter's home. Typically, we don't know all the places they may have been over the years other than what we've stated in the description.
