Fantastic General Ben Lincoln Signed Citizenship for Seaman During British Impressment
Single page partially printed document signed by Benjamin Lincoln, "this Eighth Day of September in the year of our Lord 1797". 7.5" x 9.5". This document attests to the citizenship of seaman Peter Robinson (of Hingham Massachusetts) at a time when the English were impressing American seamen.
"I Benjamin Lincoln, Collector of the District of Boston and Charlestown... certify that Peter Robinson, an American Seaman aged thirty... has this day produced to me Proof in the Manner directed by the Act intitled (sic) "An Act for the Relief and Protection of American Seaman..."
Benjamin Lincoln (1733-1810) was an American army officer. He served as a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. Lincoln served from 1781 to 1783 as the first United States Secretary of War under Washington during the American Revolutionary War. While Secretary of War, Lincoln became an original member of The Society of the Cincinnati of the state of Massachusetts and was elected as the first president of the Massachusetts Society on June 9, 1783.A great signed B.
