European, France, ca. 1936. A wonderful ensemble of eight original fashion plates, that appear to be signed "Anne Tossi '36" - although the signature is quite stylized and somewhat difficult to decipher. Five of the images depict women donning 1930s haute couture fashion; one presents a blonde woman wielding a bow and arrow; finally, the last two present women in Rococo fashion - the woman donning a pastel pink and blue gown with large bows adorning the bodice identified with the date "1760" before the artist's signature, and the model with ringlets and a pink and white bowed gown labeled "1675" beside the signature. Size of largest: 11" L x 7.5" W (27.9 cm x 19 cm)

During the 1930s, fashion was slowly evolving from the relatively boyish look of the 1920s to a more curvaceous, feminine silhouette. In "100 Years of Fashion," Cally Blackman, a lecturer on the history of fashion at Central Saint Martins, writes "By the early 1930s, the fashionable silhouette was evolving into a slender, elongated torso with widening shoulders and a neat head with softly waved short hair." (p. 13). Rococo styles of the 17th and 18th century favored pastel pink and baby blue hues, extravagance, full flowing silhouettes, and lavish decoration.
