Description
Central Asia, northeastern India/northwestern Burma, Naga people, ca. last quarter of the 19th century CE. A fascinating shield made to be used with a spear and sword. It features a woven rattan backing with a frame of light, reed-like wood, and is lashed together with natural fibers. The rattan backing is exposed when looked at from behind. The front of the shield is covered with leather, then decorated with three carved wooden monkey skulls and several clusters of red and black goat hair. Size: 16.7" W x 30.75" H (42.4 cm x 78.1 cm)

Rich patina on all surfaces. The wooden skulls and hair are in nice condition. The leather features deposits on the lower part of its body.
