Porcupine – striking image of a unique and fascinating animal, made into a collectible chromolithograph by Louis Prang. Prang was a notable American color artist/printer, one of the finest in the 19th century. This vintage plate comes from J. G. Wood’s “Animate Creation,” published 1885 by premier book and art publisher Selmar Hess. Chromolithographs begin life when an artist reinterprets the colors of a painting by drawing them on a separate stone plate, then printing those images--one at a time--on a special sheet. As many as 20-30 separate plates may be used, making it very time-consuming and rarely used, thus making chromoliths quite scarce. Because the original painting is reinterpreted when the artist creates the plates, the resulting print is considered original art. Beautiful impression on clean paper. Original protective tissue present. Couple of small marks near bottom edge and very light edge toning (neither will show when matted). 5 x 7.75 image on 9.625 x 12.625 sheet.
