Description
**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Near East, Northern Syria, ca. late 3rd to early 2nd millennium BCE. A hand-built terracotta female fertility idol of a characteristically abstract form with an incised pubis and arms bent beneath flush breasts. Her protruding face bears a bar-shaped 'beak' nose between a pair of discoid eyes, and her wild coiffure projects from either side of her head. Fertility idols like this example are perhaps representative of the ancient goddess Astarte (also Ishtar) who was associated with femininity, war, and motherhood. Size: 1.625" W x 2.7" H (4.1 cm x 6.9 cm); 4.2" H (10.7 cm) on included custom stand.
