Description
Daoguang Period or Later
Monumental, with cylindrical neck, the ovoid body is decorated with scrolls and flowers against a yellow enamel ground, the body with three cartouches, each depicting five boys engaged in various activities and leisurely pursuits. Red Daoguang seal mark on the base.
H. 20 1/2 in.
Note: Chinese art depicting young boys at play is considered a sign of good fortune. It was considered a blessing of having many sons to carry on the family name. The combination of five boys derives from the saying 'Wu Zi Deng Ke', referring to the supreme achievement of five sons from the same family passing the civil service examination.
