"The Mermaid" Partial carved Mahogany Renaissance Revival tall clock case by R.J. Horner, bottom portion: a case with a door having a carved Northwind mask above an elongated oval glazed, flanked by high relief carved mermaids with double-twisting tails atop acanthus plinths, resting on a paneled base carved with a sleeping putto, scrollwork, and birds, above a gadrooned plinth, the whole rising on melon carved compressed bun feet. Clock case only, no inner clockworks included. The case is in remarkably well-preserved quality condition and will make a statement in any room. Dimensions: 74 inches high x 31 inches wide x 17.5 inches deep. Robert J. Horner was a clerk in a certain store in New York City when he took his knowledge of design and business to establish R.J. Horner & Co. in 1886, in Manhattan. HornerÂ’s targeted the wealthy as well as those of the emergent middle class resulting in lasting success for his endeavor. Horner used only the finest mahogany and oak hardwoods for his works and built a reputation for high-quality furniture of impeccable taste in both ornate and elegant styles.
