Item Details
Description
Considering how prolific and how well-known he was as a painter of dogs and cats, we know very little of this artist, who does not appear to have exhibited. Apparently, his reputation spread widely enough among pet owners that he was able to support himself without doing so.; Aistrop is known to have painted between the years 1880 and 1920. That his paintings often sell in the mid-four figures at auction attests that he is still well-regarded. An illustration of one of his portraits, a bulldog, appears in William Secord’s reference, “Dog Painting: 1840-1940.”; Aistrop painted in a similar style to animal artists Arthur Wardle and John Alfred Wheeler. His skill in painting animals earned him many commissions from pet owners and dog breeders. Many of his works were head studies and portraits often produced on a small scale. Most of his works, as this one, were on the small side.; There is no doubt that Aistrop was at the top of his game when this portrait of two adorable creatures was painted. It has often been said that cats and kittens are difficult to paint; however, in portraying the personalities and images of these two, this work shows the artist's familiarity and an ease with his subjects; As both kittens were long-haired, the artist used short, heavier brush strokes to make them appear as fluffy as possible. The faces were finely painted in great detail. And of course, the piece de resistance was adding the large pink and blue bows.; The jade green background harmonizes well with the gray, white and brown colors of the kittens. Aistrop signed the piece on the lower right corner in white.; It is housed in its original mahogany frame with a restored gilded slip.; The condition of the painting is excellent, as it has been professionally cleaned and restored. The frames also is in excellent condition and has developed a honey red-brown color with a soft, rich patina. There is a small loss of veneer on the top edge of the frame.; It measures 12 inches wide by 9-1/4 inches high.
