Jean Dufy (1888 - 1964) France. Mixed Media on Paper. Measure 11"in H x 7 3/4"in W and 20"in H x 17 1/4"in W with frame. Known for: Painting-city scenes and musicians, porcelain decoration, theatre sets. Jean Dufy was born in 1888. He was born into a family of artists and was the brother of the famous painter Raoul Dufy. Dufy only gradually discovered his passion for painting, whilst attending exhibitions of works by the French avant-garde artists in his hometown of Le Havre. After his military service, he moved to Paris in 1912, where he met Derain, Braque, Picasso and Apollinaire. In the 1950's and 60's, Dufy traveled extensively through Europe and North Africa, where he found new motifs for his works. Again and again, he also portrayed the city of Paris, its city gates, streets, squares, coaches, as well as the Eiffel Tower and the Seine. Often he was inspired by music and theater. Dufy’s works are held in numerous museums worldwide, including the Musée National d'Art Moderne and Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Albertina in Vienna, the Art Institute of Chicago and the MoMA in New York.
