Description
Lievens, After Jan (Dutch/German 1607 - 1674), Head of an Old Man, Profile Left, red chalk with a watercolor border on wove paper, c.mid to late 18th century, 10.5 x 7.75 inches. Provenance: Rifkin Fine Arts, Riverdale N.Y.; The Estate of Marc and Lillian Raeff, Tenafly N. J., framed in a gilded wood frame measuring 21 x 15 inches. The drawing is related to several other studies that Lievens made as studies for a series of etchings called the Tronies. Other head studies that he etched with a profile that matches the subject drawing include Bearded Oriental Man with Turban Holl. 35, Oriental Man Facing Left, Holl.38, Oriental Man Facing Right, 39, Old Bearded Man Facing Left, Holl.40, Old Bearded Man Facing Right, Holl. 41.
Condition
Overall good condition, gentle horizontal crease across the middle, with spots of foxing and some acidification on the periphery and paper loss at the lower right and a small tears to margins.
