Description
Furnerius, Abraham (Born 1628), Thatched Cottages in The Woods, pen and brown ink and grey wash on laid paper, 3.5 x 5.5 inches, Provenance: Pal (Paul) Majovsky Collection, Budapest, circa 1911; Provenance: Rifkin-Young Fine Arts, Riverdale N.Y.; The Estate of Marc and Lillian Raeff, Tenafly N. J., framed in a flat panel gilded wood frame measuring 10.75 x 12.75 inches, Abraham Furnerius was a pupil of Rembrandt in the early 1640s. His fellow student Samuel van Hoogstraaten wrote in 1678 that he "was later excellent in his landscapes". We know of this artist who died early on mainly landscapes influenced by the style of Rembrandt. Furnerius was the son of the surgeon and organist Johannes Furnerius. His sister Cornelia married Philips Koninck, another pupil of Rembrandt in 1641. The inventory of Maria Furnerius in 1673 mentions landscape paintings but no painting by Furnerius has been identified to this day.
