Henry Wells (1805-1878) and William Fargo (1818-1881) Financial entrepreneurs. Wells and Fargo were the founders of the modern-day financial firms of American Express and Wells Fargo. Wells was the supervisor of the younger Fargo. He was also the 27th Mayor of Buffalo, serving from 1862 until 1866. 12” x 8 ½” stock certificate for shares in American Express Company, October 13, 1865, signed by Wells as president and Fargo as secretary There are no cancellation stamps.
