Central Asia, Afghanistan, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A cast-bronze incense vessel of a tubular form with dozens of diamond-shaped perforations across the body and lid that allow scent to escape. The domed lid has a protruding floral finial on top that matches a similar finial beneath the body as well as two perforated tabs that line up with a corresponding pair atop the body for securely fastening the vessel shut. Vessels like this example were perhaps hung in temples or homes to create pleasant scents throughout the structure or hung from horses when riding through a town. Size (w/ lid): 2.9" W x 13" H (7.4 cm x 33 cm)
Provenance: private California, USA collection, by descent, moved from Germany in 1997, originally collected in the 1970s in Hamburg, Germany

Condition
Lid is removable. Light encrustations to lid and body, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina throughout.
