Description

Title: Large Staffordshire Platter Churchyard late 19th C

Size: 13 ½” (34.3 cm) wide x 12 ¼” (31.1 cm) diameter x 1 7/8” (4.8 cm) tall.

Description: A large and colorful molded transferware platter with a central design of a churchyard surrounded by idyllic floral and tree decorations. The acanthus leaf handles decorate the platter even further. The low fired ceramic platter has been molded and decorated with a pleasing pale blue transfer. The cavetto has a repeating design of berry branches with a tiny flower edge. The central well is decorated with a bucolic scene of a churchyard, garden and castle in the distance. The platter has a raised foot and glazed base. The glaze is thin, smooth, and shiny with very fine crazing. The number 14 and what looks like a laying down letter I or a bar is impressed in the bottom. MEASUREMENTS 13 ½” (34.3 cm) wide x 12 ¼” (31.1 cm) diameter x 1 7/8” (4.8 cm) tall. Weighs 2 lb 15.1 oz (1330 g) CONDITION There is a very small rim chip under both handles that you don’t see unless you turn the platter over. There is wear to the central wear and a few stain spots. There are glaze flaws on the central well, such as tiny blue spots and pimples. There are pimples, blue spots and some staining underneath and a few glaze losses on the rim edge. The plate looks great for its age. A nice large antique platter to make a statement with shabby chic, Victorian or English cottage decors. You will definitely spot this platter from across the room.
