**First Time At Auction**

North America, Southern United States, Mississippian culture, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A large hand-knapped chert stone tool with a wide cutting edge and a narrow butt end. The chert has nice beige and creamy gray hues. This hefty tool could have served a variety of tasks such as cutting, scraping hides, or digging, and it may have been attached to a wooden handle. An old label on the verso marks the discovery of the tool in 1936, a great find! Size: 8.75" L x 4" W (22.2 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private Kansas City, Missouri, USA collection; ex-John Townsend collection, formed in the 1970s and earlier.
