Egypt, Coptic culture, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A remarkable pottery fragment featuring the black-painted bust of a figure with vegetal decoration to their right. The ancient figure displays huge, target-like eyes, a rectangular nasal bridge, a straight nose, petite lips, and a pointed chin, all framed by a black coiffure. A delicate necklace with three pendants adorns the figure's neck as four vertical strips fall down her square shoulders. The top border is adorned by a lovely dotted pattern. Previously part of a vessel, the fine piece is an impressive example from ancient Coptic culture! Size: 5.5" W x 6" H (14 cm x 15.2 cm); 7.625" H (19.4 cm) on included custom stand.

The Coptic culture included the Christian descendants of the ancient Egyptians. The emergence of Coptic art coincided with the decline of the Roman Empire and corresponded with the reemergence of native art in Egypt.

Fragment of larger piece. Repaired from two pieces with break line visible. Expected surface wear with some light nicks and abrasions. Clay with metal tube attached to back, allowing it to fit onto its custom stand. Otherwise, very nice with impressive remaining pigments.
