Description
2 19th c. Chinese Export Blue Canton Bowls. 1 at 10", good condition and Oval 10 1/2", tiny hairline, hard to see to 1 rim. Weight 3 pds 8 oz. PROVENANCE: The Estate of Dr. Fraser Wilson, Charleston SC. Dr. Wilson will be remembered for his love of antiques and his dedication to Charleston's history and material culture. He was a Life Trustee of Historic Charleston Foundation and opened his home for house tours for 39 years. Dr. Wilson was appointed to the South Carolina Governor's Mansion Commission by Governors James B. Edwards, Richard W. Riley, Carol Campbell, David M. Beasley, James Hodges, and Mark Sanford. He was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by the Governors for his exemplary service on the Commission He was a member of the Charleston Club, the South Carolina Society, the St. Andrew's Society, the St. Cecilia Society, the Agricultural Society and the Carolina Yacht Club. He was a member of St. Michael's church. From the collection of Dr. Fraser Wilson of Charleston, SC. Dr. Wilson's Blue Canton collection was so complete, it was borrowed by Mottahedeh so that they could make the Blue Canton for the Historic Charleston Foundation that is still sold in their shop today. One of several lots of his Blue Canton being sold. The most fashionable tables in the early American Republic were set with blue and white “Canton” or “Nanking” wares, named for the great Chinese trading ports from which they came. Chinese blue and white porcelain was in demand in this country well into the nineteenth century and has become a part of the heritage of many American families.
