Two large waterfall landscapes by Chinese artist L. Tsui signed and dated, each with double red block seals, watercolor ink on rice paper. One depicts a fisherman at the base of a waterfall, the other shows three waterfalls in near, midrange, and distant perspective. Fisherman scene 39 x 33.5 inches framed size. Three waterfalls scene 37 x 32.5 inches framed size. Noted folds to rice paper prior to framing are visible on inspection. Clean very fine image quality. No other issues noted. Ink wash painting uses tonality and shading achieved by varying the ink density, both by differential grinding of the ink stick in water and by varying the ink load and pressure within a single brushstroke. Ink wash painting artists spend years practicing basic brush strokes to refine their brush movement and ink flow. These skills are closely related to those needed for basic writing in East Asian characters, and then for calligraphy, which essentially uses the same ink and brushes. In the hand of a master, a single stroke can produce astonishing variations in tonality, from deep black to silvery gray.
