Description
Two lots of black basalt-ware, in particular a very good and early 19th century black basalt lidded teapot commemorating Wellington's 1813 victory over the French at Vitoria, modelled with a lion's head spout and a molded panel on one side depicting Britannia crowning Wellington with a laurel wreath, the other side noting the armies of Spain and Portugal who Wellington assisted with the Campaign. Dimensions 6.75" high x 12" long. Provenance: previously retailed by Beaver Hall Antiques, Gananoque, Ontario, Canada. The teapot is together with a Wedgwood black basalt cream jug decorated with molded neoclassical motifs, impressed marks on underside. Measuring 4.25" high.
Condition
Teapot: Loss to bottom of opening of spout(lower jaw), minor loss to teapot lid rim and minor fritting to edge and interior rim of lid.
