Benjamin Owen Tyler was born in Massachusetts and grew up in Vermont. He was taught penmanship and stenography at a young age and later used those talents to teach the cadets at the West Point Military Academy. Tyler also produced engravings of important American figures, such as George Washington, and facsimiles of letters and important documents. He is perhaps most famous for creating the "first correct copy" of the Declaration of Independence after the original was nearly destroyed in the fires set by the British during the War of 1812. The copy was endorsed by Secretary of State Richard Rush, son of one of the original signers, Benjamin Rush.
