Description
Title: Amerique Septentrionale. Nova Mappa Geographica Americae Septentrionalis insulas praecipuas Partes divisa.
Cartographer: Henry Popple (d. 1743)
Handcolored copper plate engraving, 1782.
Published by J. M. Probst, Augsburg.
Image size 19 1/4 x 19" (48.8 x 48.2 cm) plus margins.
A very attractive and quite charming map of America. This is an unusual German edition of the index map for Henry Popple's extremely large twenty-sheet map, which was the first large-scale printed map of North America. The Popple map was commissioned by the Lord Commissioner of Trade and Plantation as a tool for mediating disputes arising from the Competing claims of English, French and Spanish Colonist. This map showed the claims in with a definite English bias. Some of the inset maps are of Annapolis Royal, Boston, New York, Charlestown and St. Augustine. The four views are of Niagara Falls, Mexico City, Quebec, and New York. Although this map has some staining off the mid-Atlantic coastline the overall appearance in fine.
