Seymour Joseph Guy was an American painter, best known for his genre paintings of children. Born and trained in England, Guy immigrated to the United States in 1854, where he settled in Brooklyn, New York. He was a member of the Sketch Club and close friends with British painter John George Brown, whom he worked closely with for many years.

At the peak of his popularity, Guy was receiving commissions from such important individuals as William Henry Vanderbilt (1873). Unfortunately, Guy also lived to see his work fall out of fashion. His clean, polished strokes began to lose favor with the public around 1880 and by the time of his death in 1910, he was all but forgotten. His work has seen some revival in recent years.
