Description
Title: Brooklyn Sanitary Fair, 1864. New England Kitchen.
Lithograph, printed in color, 1864.
Lith. of A. Brown & Co. 47 Nassau St. N.Y.
Created for use in Henry McCloskey's Manual of 1864.
Image size 13 x 16 1/4" (33 x 41.2 cm).
The Brooklyn Sanitary Fair was held on February 22, 1864 with the goal of raising funds to assist the Union army during the American Civil War. Similar fairs were held in major cities across the northeast, but the Brooklyn fair was particularly notable because it raised $400,000 (about four million by today's standards), $300,000 more than the organizers had projected.
