Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Eastern Arizona, Ancestral Pueblo/Anasazi culture, ca. 1050 to 1225 CE. A beautiful example of the Puerco black-on-red pottery style, made during the early part of the Ancestral Puebloan ascendancy over the Four Corners region. The bowl rests on a rounded base with walls that flare gently upward to a rim. The exterior surface is an earthy orange-red with nice areas of burnishing marks. The interior is painted with two registers of repeating geometric motifs below the rim and along the basin. Women traditionally were the potters of this ancient culture, and the patterns would have had personal and/or cultural symbolic meaning. Size: 8.75" W x 4" H (22.2 cm x 10.2 cm)
