Early 20th C. African Wood, Cloth, & Bead Agni Figure
Item Details
Description
Africa, Ivory Coast, Lagoon people, ca. early 20th century CE. Carved in the round from a single piece of wood, a nude Agni (also Anyi) female figure presenting angular shoulders, perky breasts, delineated musculature, and striated/curvilinear/fretted raised markings - perhaps indicating scarification - adorning her face and neck. She is dressed in a dark green loin cloth that is secured to her waist with three strands of red glass trade beads, as well as two necklaces and two anklets of white glass trade beads. The skillfully-carved figure stands with her arms bent at her elbows as she holds out two fists before her, with her muscular legs slightly apart. She faces front with slender, closed eyes flanking her broad nose above a stylized rectangular mouth displaying gritted teeth. Size: 5.25" W x 27.375" H (13.3 cm x 69.5 cm); 27.625" H (70.2 cm) on included custom stand

Her head is capped by an elaborate coiffure of several rows, all with incised striations representing strands of hair and featuring two high arches at the center that extend from her forehead to her back. A cylindrical sack is tied to her stomach, sitting above her bulbous posterior and adorned with vertical registers of geometric designs. The entirety of this intricate and abstract figure presents with a highly burnished rich hue of chocolate brown.

Figures like this example are believed to possess supernatural powers and belong to groups of various age associations. Oftentimes they were the property of a soothsayer/healer. This piece was probably created to send messages to spirits believed to rule the world.
