Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Lambayeque Valley, Middle Sican-Lambayeque culture, ca. 900 to 1100 CE. A fabulous blackware pottery vessel presenting in two tiers with a rounded top and a pair of conical spouts, all sitting upon a flared foot. Each tier represents a food bowl containing food-stuffs highly important to the survival of the agriculturally based society of the Lambayeque peoples. The rim of the lower bowl is decorated with raised beans or another legume, while the upper contains the silhouette of seven crabs in relief. A sizable, sweeping stirrup decorated with impressed temple step patterns connects the two spouts, while a similar band of temple-step motifs adorns the foot of the ancient vessel. Finally, a pair of abstract zoomorphic embellishments project from the base of the spouts. Size: 8.5" in diameter x 9" H (21.6 cm x 22.9 cm)
