Description
Piled Monks Robe, Tibet, Late 19th C., wool, 6'5'' x 3'11'' (196 x 119 cm). Weight: 8 lbs. These are Tsuk Truk type weavings. Woven on a back strap loom in narrow strips. Similar in structure to the Tsuk Truk carpets woven in three or four joined panels. These were made for and used as winter robes for monks in Tibet. Woven by patrons or family members as tribute or gifts to support the dedication of monks. Typically worn while sitting in the cold of monasteries. Though we cannot be certain these are from the area, we have seen early photos of monks wearing these type of robes/cloaks from Ganden monastery and others from southern regions of Tibet.
