Description
Fine Large and Rare "Shou" Rug, Tibet, Late 19th C., 5'1'' x 9'7'' (155 x 292 cm). The red field and the symbols strongly suggest this was made for a dignitary, as red was often associated with dignitaries. The peonies symbolize prosperity, and the three calligraphic characters are the Shou character, a blessing of Longevity. The two characters at the center of the peonies are highly stylized variants of the Shou, and the central character is orientated at 90 degrees to the warp. Weight: 25 lbs. Material: wool pile, wool warp, wool weft. Note: There Are No Hidden or Confidential Reserves in this Auction; All Acceptable Bidding Commences at the Online Start Price. Please let us know if you would like to receive a condition report or have any specific questions regarding a rug's condition. Condition reports will be sent during the week prior to the auction, and can be requested via email (lot inquiry button) or by telephone: 215-438-4700. Absence of a statement to condition in the description does not construe a statement of any kind. Please refer to Terms and Conditions of the sale.
