Attributed to Tancredi Parmeggiani, it does not have a COA. Medium: mixed media/paper, signed on paper lower right, 25 x 19 inches. Provenance: private owner from Spain.
Biography: 1927 - 1964. Tancredi Parmeggiani was an Italian modernist painter. After spending his childhood in Belluno, where he attended the high school at the College of the Salesians, in 1943 he interrupted his classical studies to enroll in art school in Venice, which he completed two years later.In 1946, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice to study at the Free School of Nude with Armando Pizzinato. In this time he met and became friends with Emilio Vedova. At the end of 1947, Parmeggiani traveled to Paris where he met the European avant-garde of the first half of the century. Between 1948 and 1949, he lived and worked between Feltre and Venice and, in May 1949, he held his first solo exhibition, which was at the Gallery Sandri.In 1950 staying in Rome, he affiliated with the group Age d'Or, which organized international exhibitions and editions. The following year, the First Italian Abstract Art Show was held at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art of Rome. Shortly thereafter he returned to Venice, where he met Peggy Guggenheim, who provided him a studio and bought some of his work. In 1952, again in Venice, he was awarded a prize for his painting, Graziano, and in the same year along with other artists he signed the manifesto of Spazialismo, a movement founded in Milan around 1947 by Lucio Fontana .In 1952, he exhibited at the Galleria del Cavallino in Venice, and in 1953 he exhibited at the Galleria del Naviglio in Milan with a presentation by Peggy Guggenheim and Virgilio Guidi. He was also invited to Turin, where he exhibited in the hall next to Hans Hartung. In 1954, at the Kunsthalle Bernhe, he participated in Tendances Actuelles with Jackson Pollock, Wolfgang Wols and Georges Mathieu.In 1955, he had a final separation from Peggy Guggenheim and left for Paris, where he exhibited in a group show at the Galerie Stadler. In Paris he met Jean Dubuffet, Asger Jorn and Karel Appel. In the following years Parmeggiani exhibited at Saidenberg Gallery in New York, 'Hanover Gallery in London, Galleria Selecta Rome and participated in the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh.In 1958 he married the Norwegian painter Tove Dietrichson.In 1959 he exhibited at the Gallery of Aries and returned to Paris, where in December, his daughter Elizabeth was born. In the spring of 1960, he returned to Milan where he collaborated with the National Gallery of Aries. He also traveled to Norway and exhibited at the Anti-Procès exhibition at the Gallery of the Venice Canal.In 1962, after a trip to Sweden, he exhibited at the Venetian Canal Gallery and Gallery Levi of Milan, and also received the Marzotto Prize in Valdagno. At the end of the year, he had a nervous breakdown and was hospitalized in Tigli Villa of Monza with a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia .Staying briefly in Rome in 1963 and shortly after the birth of his son Alexander, Parmeggiani returned to Venice, where again he was hospitalized. He exhibited in 1964 at the Venice Biennale, and after a short trip to Sweden with his wife, returned to Rome with his brother. Here, at the dawn of September 27, he took his own life by jumping into the Tiber River.
